Snuffle Mat with Dog

Original publish date: August 30, 2023 | Last updated: February 23, 2026

Snuffle mats or snuffle balls, are interactive feeding and enrichment tools for dogs that provide mental and physical stimulation. They consist of a mat or fabric with multiple layers and pockets for hiding food and treats.

When dogs use their noses to search for and find hidden treats or food, it engages their brains in a natural and instinctual behaviour known as snuffling.

This behaviour has numerous mental and physical benefits for your dog, and using a snuffle mat can be a great way to add some fun to their lives!

Mental Stimulation and Stress Relief: Snuffle mats and snuffle balls utilize a dog's highly developed sense of smell. By hiding food within the mat, dogs are encouraged to use their noses (with all 200 million scent receptors) and natural foraging instincts to search. Finding these treats or food requires problem-solving skills, helps foster Operant Behaviour, and keep their minds active and engaged; 30 minutes of intense sniffing can be just as tiring as an hour-long walk!

Snuffle mats can be an outlet for stress in dogs, because they have an innate need to partake in hunting and foraging behaviours, and these mats simulate this natural behaviour by allowing them to "hunt" for food. The acts of sniffing and searching for food are mentally enriching and can help alleviate boredom or anxiety. It can be particularly beneficial for dogs with separation anxiety or for dogs to redirect their energy, because meeting these instincts can lead to a sense of satisfaction and contentment in dogs.

Slow Feeding:

Many dogs tend to eat their food too quickly,  which can lead to digestive problems, especially with kibble diets. Snuffle mats can slow a dog's eating pace by limiting the amount of food they ingest per mouthful. Rather than having them inhale food from a regular bowl, dogs have to work to find the hidden food. This slower-paced feeding can aid digestion, prevent choking or gulping, and reduce the risk of bloat - a potentially fatal condition in dogs.

Physical Exercise and Scent Work:

While snuffle mats primarily provide mental stimulation, they can also offer some mild physical exercise. Sniffing and searching for food uses a dog's paws, nose, and tongue to explore the mat, versus their stationary bowl.

Snuffle mats can also help to improve a dog's scent discrimination skills by teaching them to differentiate between scents and follow specific smells to locate hidden treats or food. This is more noticeable when using multiple types of foods or treats in their snuffle mat.

It's important to note that while snuffle mats and balls provide various benefits, they are a supplement for a well-rounded enrichment program that includes other mental and physical activities. Snuffle mats or balls should be used under supervision, and dogs should not be left unattended while using them.

Additionally, always ensure that the materials used in the snuffle mat are safe for dogs and the mat is regularly cleaned to maintain hygiene.
